State Rep. Sam Rohrer, R-Berks, wants to eliminate concurrent buck and doe rifle hunting seasons temporarily across most of the state to allow time for the Pennsylvania Game Commission to improve how it estimates the state's deer population.
In comments this morning before the Game Commission board, Rohrer said, "Hunters across the state have confirmed by the thousands that there have been massive reductions in the deer herd."
He questioned whether the commission's estimates of deer population reflect that reported reduction. "It demands attention in this next season. We cannot wait until next year to learn that the herd has fallen below sustainable levels."
The Game Commission is expected to set hunting seasons, bag limits and doe license allocations by tomorrow. Rohrer's proposal to eliminate concurrent buck and doe seasons would return to the old schedule of two weeks of buck season followed by 3 days of doe hunting.
The Game Commission estimates the state's deer population at more than 1 million.

Isn't that great. Another politician sticking his nose where it doesn't belong. What is his background in wildlife management?
According to his bio, it's ZERO. He's a career politician.
These are the kind of people who give hunters a bad name and the impression that it's all about killing a deer and when they don't they cry. I'd bet the farm he gets out hunting once or twice a year and thinks he's entitled to a deer everytime he goes hunting for them.
Stepping back in time to that limited season would upset alot of hunters I know. We just can't not show up for work for 2 or 3 days because we had to go hunting.
And where did he pull that over a million deer number from? Must be more capitol hill math. Not even the pgc would make that claim!
