This was posted on another fishing/hunting site I visit thought it made for some interesting reading. Posted: Tue Jun 12, 2007 11:11 am Post subject: This just in .. USFS study -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, here it goes. The US Forest Service just completed a study on reforestation and salvage logging after fires. They determined there is a higher risk of forest fires from all the sapplings that spring up in the cleared areas. Here is a quote from the article about the report.: "He added that the study's findings indicated that on National Forests that burn frequently, it would be a good idea to plant young trees farther apart and keep the lower branches pruned to reduce fire danger — something the Forest Service is starting to do." (I think clear cutting would also qualify here) Now, we are paying forest service personnel to thin the new sprouts and to prune the trees lower branches!! Excuse me.. did I miss something?? Is this not what the deer used to do for free?? I am sure that I just heard them beating the drum for higher sapping survival and how terrible it was that the deer had the forest browsed to as high as a deer can reach. And all that was bad, bad, bad. I guess they will fund a study to produce whatever kind of forest management best suits the current economic goals. Perhaps they were standing down wind of some weird smoke when they annalysed this. Here is where he found this info.... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070612/ap_on_sc/wildfire_logging_7;_ylt=AkzIa7VusqDKEFTbdRtAsgoE1vAI this is the article about the report.. the National Academy of Sciences, I believe has the report on file. --Last edited by smokepole on 2007-06-12 14:56:24 -- |

smoke, I think you are comparing apples to oranges. It's when seedlings pop up and a deer eats the whole kit and kaboodle or nips the tops off is when it hurts. I see stump sprouts inside fences and zip on stumps outside fences. I don't see how pruning and even in the case of the USP, deer scratching their hooves on trees hurts smokepole, I know deer don't hone their hooves on trees, I just had to add that for a little pun. --Last edited by Buff on 2007-06-12 17:17:18 -- |
