Here are some interesting figures for 2006 from PennDot here in Jefferson County. Keep in mine PennDot ONLY picks up deer ON or along side of state maintained roads.. the PGC gets the rest...

January thru September they average picking up 62.3 deer per month..

October thru December they picked up an aveagre of 104.3 per month..

So thats' a total of about 874 deer along state maintained highways last year.

That's about 5% of the total number of deer harvested not just in Jefferson County but all of 2F last year.. AND does not count any deer the PGC picked up in Jefferson County...

and still people say there are not enough deer in Jefferson County ???????

that number also does not count the number of deer that were picked up and taken home to eat.  I know my son has gotten at least one every year for the last four years.  dd

It also doesn't count the many that are hit, but manage to get into the woods or brush and not be found.
I've had many "close calls" but only ever had one actual road-kill, and I was doing about 40 mph. The deer jumped off a high brushy bank and landed about 6 inches in front of me, maybe even brushed the front grill before it hit the road.
No matter how fast you drive -- ya can't hit em if they ain't there!
My neighbor is contantly hammering his grandson about how fast he drives and tells him that someday he is going to put a deer right through his windshield and he better slow down.
The grandson's reply: No Pap, it don't work that way. If you drive fast enough you get past them before they can run out in front of you.
