BROOKVILLE - Dozens of volunteers spent nearly 10 hours searching the Red Bank Creek in Brookville Thursday but failed to locate a missing fisherman.
Thomas E. McLaughlin, 59, of the New Bethlehem area was reported missing by his relatives after he failed to return Wednesday from a fishing trip to Brookville. McLaughlin's car was located in Brookville.
The Brookville Borough police launched a search for McLaughlin, aided by the Brookville, Pine Creek and Corsica firefighters. Large lights were used to illuminate the Red Bank Creek from the confluence of the Sandy Lick and North Fork creeks to the South White Street (Route 36) bridge. Divers attempted to search the stream but darkness and the swift current made the job difficult.
The search was resumed at 8 a.m. Thursday. A Pennsylvania State Police helicopter overflew the stream and used a camera in attempt to locate McLaughlin. Although some suspicious items were seen near the Brookville Borough maintenance building on Darrah Street, the debris was found to be too old to have been McLaughin's equipment.
At least a dozen area fire companies aided the search with their boats and manpower, but nothing was found. Thursday afternoon the Clarion Canine Search and Rescue Unit arrived at the scene and the highly-trained dogs walked both sides of the stream attempting to find the spot where McLaughlin may have entered the water. The dogs were also placed in boats and ferried slowly up and down the creek. At least one dog had a "hit," but a second dog could not verify the scent.
Divers went into the stream in three-member teams, linked together by a length of rope. Successive waves of divers searched the areas of the stream that may have trapped McLaughlin. By 5 p.m., the search area had been exhausted.
The Brookville Volunteer Fire Company is requesting area residents be on the look out for McLaughlin who is described as a white male, 59 years of age, weighing approximately 220 pounds and standing 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He has blue eyes and grayish, balding hair. He was last seen wearing a camo jacket, blue sweatshirt, gray hooded sweatshirt, green fishing vest and Cabela's waders.
A missing person report has been filed with the Brookville Borough Police Department.

The man was supposed to have been found now in North Fork not too far from where the search began, the victim of an apparent heart attack.
No other info was available.
