I know it's a bit early, but with our first snow on the ground I'm hoping ice fishing will not be far behind. I've been ice fishing for many years. I fish mainly at Kahle, Wilhelm, and Lake Aurther. I've also been up on the St. Lawrance River and at Black Lake, NY.

I fish mainly for pan fish, but do carry a couple of tip-ups for walleye.

I would like to know if there are any other ice fishermen on this board. Maybe we swap lies and fishing info.

I'll probably have a 2 Man Cabela's Ice Shack for sale as we get closer to season. I purchased a single man shack last season and find it much easier to handle by myself.

About the earliest I've ever been on the ice is mid December. Last winter I fished until March 20th and probably could have squeezed in another day or so.

Electronics have been a real asset to me. There are all kinds available, but I just take my Lowrance out of the boat and use it. It's great to know exactly where your jig is in relation to the bottom and also suspended fish.

Maybe I can get Doc out on the ice and we can discuss the PGC, politics, or the current DMP....just kidding Doc!

I think I'm one of the only other ice fishing fools on the board.  I mostly fish off Presque Isle for bluegills and crappies.  I use a frabill one man flipover(scout?).  It's way easier to drag than anything else.  And I think I would drive home if I forgot my marcum fish finder.  dd

Well, I do believe that I will get into ice-fishing this year.  I have done an occasional trip before, but this year, weather up in northwestern PA (specifically Warren) might be worth.

even after the most recent warm snap, at christmas, there is water up here that is very close too, if not already safe to icefish from.

...

I'd appreciate any advice you want to give.  I know a local crappie pond- are they hard to catch through the ice?  do you jig or setup tipups with small minnows?

Jolie,  crappies aren't that hard to catch under the ice,  once you find them.  Jigging small jigs tipped with grubs or minnows work in Erie.  Also light lines and very sensitive wire bobbers.  The best time to catch them is dusk and dawn, and expect to find them up higher in the water, not on the borrom like perch and bluegills.  Sometimes they might be only a foot or two below the ice.  Good Luck    dd
