female red bellied woodpecker. if the red goes all the way to the beak, it's a male. on this one, there is a gap in the red.from the back of the head to the beak. you can also tell a downey from a hairy by the size. the hairy is a lot bigger. the hairy has a bill as long as it's head, the downy's is shorter. the dead give away is the outside white tail feathers. the downy will have spots. the hairy's outside tail feathers are completely white. | |||

Thanks... I really did not think it was a Hairy ( too much red for one thing) but never thought of the red-bellied simply because it did not have a red belly ) | |||

there's just a little red on the belly. you got to get the right angle and up close to see it. i've only seen it in others photos. | |||
