They are also up and down I-79 about 5-10 miles apart.

Now I know.  We went to Cedar Point this past weekend and those boxes were all along the Pa. and Oh. turnpike.  I thought they were wood duck boxes.

When I saw one near the Richardsville bridge I thought some kid had lost their box kite in a tree.
There are several over on Spring Run road now too.
Thanks Buff that link is very interesting and helps to clear up what they are using them for.

they are all threw the woods some are purple. there were some on the allegheny at tionesta also. I thought they were either butterfly boxes or bat boxes
