Well, here we are with the final weekend before us.  The only birds I had respond to me was the first Saturday when I passed four jakes.

Since then I have not had a bird answer my calls.  I have heard few birds at all even though we have good numbers in the areas I hunt.  Have seen them in the fields and sign in the woods.

The weather has sucked on the days that I can hunt, mostly Saturdays.  I believe it has rained every Saturday except the first day.  Not that rain bothers me anyway as I still hunt till quitting time but it does have it's challenges.

On a positive note, the cooler weather has kept the foliage down a little helping with visibility and I have had a banner season on Morel mushrooms.  Found 8 pounds last weekend.

Anyway, Good luck to all that are going this weekend and I hope your luck is better than mine has been.

It's been the same up north.  The last gobble I heard was the firsrt day,  and I get out  about 2-3 mornings a week.  I did have a hen come in by herself last week.  I also had a hen out in the field from me this morning, but no gobblers around at all.  It sure would be nice to hear something.   dd

Agreed, can't remember when I've heard as little gobbling in season as I've heard this year.

I did get to work a long beard on friday. Took a vacation day and was in the woods and set up by 5:00. Woods were quiet so I started to move about 6:00, at 6:30 I get an answer but the bird is on posted ground. I move to about 50 yards of the boundry line and start calling. Bird is answering and coming in then I see it walk up an old tram road inside the posted property line about 10 -15 yards. He put on quite a show for about 10 minutes but wouldn't cross the the old road. After he got tired of the came I moved about 150 yards to the left and set up but he wouldn't play any more.

This morning I went to another area and again the woods were quiet I sat til 6:00 and decided to move as I had to coach a little league came at 9:30. Anyway I didn't go 125 yards and made a call and busted one off the roost, looked at my watch and it was 6:30. Don't know what it was but it never made a sound.

Are you really old enough to remember when there were huntable numbers of deer on the gamelands.

Well the turkeys won this year.  At least I heard some gobbles the last 2 times out.  Saturday was a blast.  While having two or three gobbling in front of me, I had to contend with a pair of young racoons that could not figure out what I was.  Every time I'd try scaring them away they would come back to me.  They would stare at me from 10 feet away.  Then there were a few encounters with red and fox squirrels.  The best came while walking back to the car.  As I'm walking towards the car(within sight of Walmart) I see something in the middle of the road about 100 yards away.  I stand still in the middle of the road.It keeps trotting up the road and then stops about 30 yards from me, staring at me.  Turns out to be a little red fox  carrying  a nearly dead breakfast bunny in it mouth.  After staring at me for a little while it just trotted back into the grapes and was gone.
Monday ,with all the wind, hunting was not as good.  I heard some gobbling on the roost, but they weren't as close as Saturday.  I did have one hen fly down the road right behind me.  I saw one doe, and had a 4 point 20 feet away, trying to figure out what I was before it walked away in the swamp.
Beginning to think I'm invisible when I"m wearing my camo.        dd

My season ended predictably.  No responses to my calling.  Did see three hens, that being the highlight of my last day.

Oh well, time to dust off the bow and shoot the rifles a little to get ready for the fall.
