House Game and Fisheries Committee moves Surra bill
cutting terms of game commissioners in half

HARRISBURG, May 9 – The House Game and Fisheries Committee today approved legislation introduced by state Rep. Dan Surra that would cut in half the terms for future appointees to the state Game Commission.

"The goal of this legislation is to create a better Game Commission – one that is more in step with the perspective and concerns of current sportsmen and that better reflects the priorities and policies of the legislature and governor," Surra said.

Surra's bill (H.B. 1214) would cut the current eight-year term for game commissioners to four years. The change would take effect for future Game Commission appointees.

Surra said the shorter term would accomplish several goals.

"I believe a shorter term would keep commissioners more in touch with the concerns of current sportsmen and other stakeholders," he said. "Commissioners that were appointed more than half a decade ago cannot respond to the needs of current sportsmen as well as more recent appointees."

Surra said the shorter term would also make future game commissioners more responsive to current legislative and administrative policy in Pennsylvania.

"Having a large number of commissioners on the board who were neither appointed nor confirmed by the current governor or senators makes it very difficult for the administration, the legislature, or the people they represent to influence the commission," Surra said. "My legislation would result in a more accountable and responsive Game Commission."

Surra said he also believes shorter terms for commissioners would attract more Pennsylvanians to serve on the commission. Commissioners serve on an unpaid, voluntary basis, and Surra said the position is often time-consuming and challenging.

"More sportsmen and women, along with other Pennsylvanians, might be attracted to this important position if the term of service was shorter," he said.

The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.
